The Hague (Netherlands), 12 Oct. (LaPresse) – The United States’ attacks on the International Criminal Court (ICC) are “completely illegal”, as well as “negative and cruel”. This was stated by Judge Navi Pillay, winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in an interview with the Associated Press. Pillay used strong words against Donald Trump and stated that “heads of state have a particular responsibility to clearly articulate principles, namely that the law must be respected and international law must be upheld”. A few hours after the Nobel Prize was announced in Oslo, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions against the International Criminal Court – where Pillay previously served as a judge – as part of a campaign aimed at dismantling the institution. Pillay urged countries to defend the court and, more generally, the international legal order, stating that she would like to see “collective action, not just words”, from the rest of the world.
