Madrid (Spain), Oct. 17 (LaPresse) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez turned a campaign rally of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in Fuenlabrada, on the outskirts of Madrid, into a public show of support for his wife Begoña Gómez, who is involved in a judicial investigation and is expected to stand trial in 2027 on suspicion of embezzlement and influence peddling. As reported by the Spanish newspaper Abc, Sánchez arrived at the event holding his wife’s hand, and the two exchanged hugs and a kiss on stage before he publicly declared his love for her in front of around 3,000 supporters. “Today Begoña is here with me,” the prime minister began, amid applause. “I wanted to thank you for being my wife,” he continued, before adding: “They have tried to break us in every way possible, and they have achieved exactly the opposite.” He then addressed his wife directly: “Let them hear it loud and clear: I love you.” His words were met with applause and cheers, while both appeared visibly moved. According to Abc, Gómez’s presence plays a central role in the Socialists’ electoral strategy ahead of the snap election on November 29. The PSOE aims to portray the judicial proceedings involving the prime minister’s wife as part of an alleged political and judicial persecution campaign against the government. “Love against hate,” party sources quoted by the newspaper summed up. In his speech, Sánchez also attacked the People’s Party (PP) and Vox. “On November 29, the choice is whether Spain will move forward for another four years or go back four decades all at once,” he said. “We will win because people want more rights, not fewer; they do not want cuts disguised as sacrifices, as Feijóo says, or repeals, as Abascal says,” he added. The prime minister also defended the pension system, taking aim at the right’s proposals: “If they like chainsaws so much, they should go and work in a sawmill. Pensions are off limits.”
