Rome, 19 October (LaPresse) – According to reports, a meeting on public order chaired today by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi included an analysis of the unrest that occurred in several cities in recent days. The meeting, convened by the prime minister, was also intended to assess additional measures to counter those who exploit legitimate demonstrations to spread violence and chaos. According to the assessment carried out at the government headquarters by Meloni, alongside Deputy Prime Ministers Matteo Salvini and Antonio Tajani, ministers Matteo Piantedosi, Guido Crosetto and Francesco Lollobrigida, undersecretaries Alfredo Mantovano and Giovanbattista Fazzolari, as well as senior police and intelligence officials, the phenomenon is complex. It presents new features compared with the past, including the recent past, and involves a variety of underlying motives that still need to be understood. According to information emerging from the meeting, while reaffirming the commitment to safeguarding freedom of expression and the right to hold peaceful demonstrations freely, the participants stressed the State’s determination to respond firmly, particularly by tackling unlawful and criminal behaviour. The government is therefore examining additional measures proposed by the police forces to identify further steps to make prevention and law enforcement efforts against these phenomena more effective, according to sources.
