Milan, 23 Oct. (LaPresse/AP) – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has expressed its support for Gianni Infantino for a further term as FIFA president, marking a clear change of direction from the stance it took two months ago, when it criticised the leadership of world football’s governing body over the decision to open up the organisation of the World Cup to private investors. AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa made the announcement on Friday during an extraordinary congress in Tokyo, welcoming Infantino with a warm embrace in front of the organisation’s members as he formalised the support. Sheikh Salman said: “We reaffirm our full commitment to supporting you and your leadership as you stand for a new term as FIFA President.” The AFC has 47 member associations. The FIFA elections will take place in March.
