Milan, 24 Oct. (LaPresse) – “Responsibility dictates that we proceed without losing sight of our objectives – including political ones – whilst also bearing in mind the issues of social balance and citizens’ wellbeing. But we must also remember that resources are limited, and that we must be very careful about how we proceed.” So said the Minister for the Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, speaking at the General Assembly of the Compagnia delle Opere regarding the forthcoming Budget Bill. “At this moment, given the role I hold, I must balance political objectives – part of a government programme – against an international situation in which the fundamentals have, objectively speaking, taken a turn for the worse in recent years, due to geopolitical tensions, wars that influence and have economic repercussions, but also tensions in international trade that affect our country, given that we have become a major exporting nation,” added Giorgetti, specifying that “these years have required extremely prudent management, given that our country faces these challenges with a very high level of public debt and must therefore take account of interest rate trends. It is one thing to cope with rising commodity prices, particularly energy prices; it is quite another to do so whilst also having to contend with rising interest rates”.
