Lowville (New York, US), 3 Nov. (LaPresse/AP) – A child has died in rural northern New York State after contracting measles; this is the first death in the state caused by the disease in 30 years. Local authorities have announced this. The Democratic Governor of New York State, Kathy Hochul, reported that the child died in Lewis County, approximately 150 kilometres north of Syracuse. The United States had halted the domestic spread of measles in 2000 by maintaining high vaccination rates, but in recent years these have fallen below the 95 per cent coverage required to prevent outbreaks. In neighbouring Pennsylvania, state health authorities have recorded five deaths this year and are investigating a possible sixth case.
