Rome, Nov. 7 (LaPresse) – “Today I officially announced my candidacy to continue transforming Rome, making it more efficient, more welcoming, more beautiful, greener and more supportive. And we will do so with a team that is expanding, starting with the many volunteers joining us. In fact, I would like to appeal to the people of Rome. Join us in developing the programme and taking part in the election campaign. We want it to be a major moment of democratic participation, allowing us to define the goals for the next five years with even greater precision.” Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said this on the sidelines of the presentation of his bid for re-election at the Auditorium Conciliazione in the Vatican. “Rome,” he added, “is a great city, and transforming it in depth requires 10 years. We have achieved a great deal over these past five years. We are proud of the work we have done. At the same time, we want to be judged also on the projects for the next five years, which we intend to develop together within a broad alliance of political and civic forces. As for our opponents, we will see who takes part. It will be a civilised contest, as always. We will never engage in controversy; we will focus on the positive things we have achieved and want to continue achieving. Our goal,” he then announced, “is to win in the first round: that would be an extraordinary result. At the beginning, there was understandable scepticism and resignation, and our projects were therefore met with scepticism. Now I believe that has been overcome: when we make a commitment, the people of Rome know we will deliver, because we have shown that we do. We do not shy away from action when it is necessary to start construction work, build a metro station, build a stadium or construct a waste treatment plant. We get things done.”
