I’d like to know who the incumbent candidate is first, and then we’ll see who the challenger is.” So said Senate President Ignazio La Russa, on the sidelines of the FdI event in Milan to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall, responding to those who asked him when the centre-right would reach a consensus on the mayoral candidate for Palazzo Marino. “They are the incumbents; they should tell us first” who the candidate will be, “and then we’ll decide who the challenger will be. It seems to me that three names have emerged and that it is now up to the national leadership to decide on one of the three – or I don’t know – but I think it will be one of the three as the challenger. However, I would first put the question to the left: what are they waiting for? It is up to the PD to decide: they give us the name of the incumbent and then we will say who the challenger is; that’s how it’s always been in life,” added La Russa.
