Milan, 26 May (LaPresse) – ‘The risk of escalation exists and must be averted.’ Minister for Enterprise Adolfo Urso, on the 50% US tariffs, told Repubblica: ‘We need caution, responsibility and unity of purpose.’ Urso is particularly concerned about the ‘irreparable damage that would be suffered by the economic systems of the two continents’ if the US-EU negotiations fail. ‘But,’ he stresses, ‘a trade war would also have serious political consequences, primarily for common defence, while the war in Europe continues.’ It is businesses that will foot the bill for the tariffs. What measures are you considering to help them? ‘We have already planned to reprogramme the NRRP and Cohesion funds and are also directing the resources of the Social Climate Fund in this direction. We expect to reach an additional 25 billion for businesses. Once we know what the tariffs will actually be in each sector, we will be able to develop targeted and therefore effective compensatory measures,’ Urso explained.
