South Africa: Bus overturns near Johannesburg Airport, 12 dead

Johannesburg (South Africa), March 11 (LaPresse) – At least 12 people have died and 45 others have been injured in a crash on a highway in Johannesburg near O.R. Tambo International Airport, where a bus overturned for reasons still unknown. Emergency services have reported the incident. No other vehicles were involved. The bus is lying on its side near the edge of the highway. Rescue teams are trying to lift the bus back onto its wheels to check if there are any additional victims trapped underneath, according to a spokesperson from the Ekurhuleni emergency management, William Nthladi. According to local authorities, the bus was transporting people from the Katlehong township, east of Johannesburg. The victims include 9 men and 3 women, with two bodies still trapped in the wreckage. Authorities have not yet provided the identities of the victims or the extent of the injuries of those hospitalized. Among the injured is the driver. The police are investigating the incident.
