Warsaw, April 12 (LaPresse) – "The goal of Minister Giorgetti is to reach the target (of 2% of GDP for defense spending) without triggering the national defense safeguard clause." This was stated by the Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti, during a press briefing at the end of the informal Ecofin meeting in Warsaw. "I believe that the European Commission should consider the fact that there is a NATO summit in June where commitments will be defined. Perhaps it would also be worth considering some flexibility on this. There have been many proposals on the table, including the Italian proposal. These are technical issues, but of course, a political decision must be made first and, in my opinion, we should also wait for the outcomes of the NATO summit in June. It is important to strengthen European defense, but always within the framework of the Atlantic alliance," Giorgetti added.
