Tax authorities: Bank of Italy, tax evasion down by 25 billion between 2017 and 2021

Milan, Sept. 24 (LaPresse) – “In recent years, there has been an overall reduction in tax evasion, both in absolute value and in percentage terms. It was 97 billion euros in 2017 and has decreased by about 25 billion. Even relatively, the propensity to evade taxes has dropped by nearly 6 percentage points, from 21 percent in 2017,” said Giacomo Ricotti, Head of the Tax Assistance and Consulting Service at Bankitalia, during a hearing before the Parliamentary Commission for the Supervision of the Tax Registry, regarding the inquiry into measures to combat tax evasion, security of tax registry databases, and protection of taxpayer data privacy.

“In the most recent estimates for 2021, tax and social security evasion would amount to over 82 billion euros; the tax component alone would be around 72 billion euros, with a tax evasion propensity of about 15 percent of theoretical revenue,” Ricotti specified.
