Work, Cgia: one million more jobs, but unemployment benefits rising

Rome, Oct. 25 (LaPresse) – “During these first three years of the Meloni government, the total number of employed people in Italy has increased by one million. In August last month, in fact, the total workforce reached 24.1 million. The historical record was, however, set the previous month, when in July the number of Italian workers reached 24.2 million. Unfortunately, these positive notes are contrasted by the trend in unemployment benefits.” The Cgia points out, explaining that in the first half of this year, compared with the same period in 2024, the number of authorized hours rose by almost 22 percent. In the first six months of 2025, the total reached 305.5 million hours, 54.7 million more than in the same period of 2024.
Analyzing the individual types of intervention, the Cgia notes that special unemployment benefits (Cig in deroga), although made up of a very limited number of hours, fell by 70 percent, ordinary unemployment benefits (Cig ordinaria) grew “only” by 7.3 percent, while extraordinary unemployment benefits (Cig straordinaria) saw a surge of 46.4 percent. “An increase,” the Cgia Research Office notes, “this last one is very alarming, clearly signaling the difficulties that some sectors are currently experiencing, particularly in our manufacturing industry.”
