Milan, 8 December (LaPresse) – ‘The government must change its economic policy.’ So said CGIL General Secretary Maurizio Landini, who has called for a new general strike next Friday with demonstrations across Italy, in an interview with La Stampa. “First and foremost, we are striking to increase wages. This is an emergency confirmed not only by Istat but also by Mediobanca, according to which, while profits are increasing, wages are falling, with 80% of the earnings made in recent years by private companies and large public groups being divided among shareholders rather than being invested. And then we are striking to call for the relaunch and innovation of our manufacturing and service sectors, because we are in the midst of a process of deindustrialisation that is affecting the automotive, steel, basic chemicals and textile industries, as demonstrated by the increase in the number of hours of layoffs. We want to combat a business model based on subcontracting,” adds Landini.
