Frankfurt (Germany), 1 July (LaPresse) – “We raised interest rates because the conditions were ideal for doing so.” This was stated by ECB President Christine Lagarde during a panel discussion at the ECB Forum in Sintra, as she explained the reasons behind the latest monetary policy decision. Lagarde emphasised that the macroeconomic outlook made intervention by the European Central Bank inevitable. “When inflation prospects rise, core inflation also rises and underlying inflation indicators are also showing an upward trend, whilst a return to the 2% target is not expected until towards the end of 2028, the decision was obvious,” she said. The ECB President highlighted that the Governing Council fully shared this assessment. “It was such an obvious decision that it was approved unanimously by the Governing Council,” she said.
