Milan, 23 July (LaPresse) – “The average price of diesel has broken through the psychological barrier of 2.2 euros per litre on the motorway, standing today at 2.213 euros per litre, whilst on the ordinary road network diesel has soared to 2.141 euros per litre. This relentless rise is making the summer fuel crisis increasingly painful for Italians, with a full tank of diesel now costing 13 euros more than at the start of July.” This is according to Codacons, which, based on Mimit data, has released the official figures on the impact of high fuel prices on household budgets. “Compared with 3 July, when the excise duty cut expired, diesel has risen by 25.9 cents, meaning a full tank of diesel now costs a whopping 13 euros more, whilst petrol has risen by 15.4 cents over the same period, amounting to an extra 7.7 euros per full tank. On the motorway, diesel has risen by 24.5 cents, an extra 12.2 euros for a full tank,” the association points out. “Faced with this situation, the government is not only continuing to procrastinate, but is also making astronomical sums in an unethical manner thanks to VAT and excise duties, which account for over 50 per cent of fuel prices in Italy,” Codacons continues. “The only possible measure is a reduction in excise duties, which the government must implement immediately via a specific decree; this reduction must apply at least until the end of August to save Italians’ holidays.”
