(LaPresse) – “After 32 consecutive days of price rises across the network, today has seen the first tentative signs of a fall in fuel prices at the pump, although the reductions in list prices remain inadequate and insufficient.” This is according to Codacons, the leading association in the fight against high fuel prices in Italy. “Despite the sharp fall in oil prices, petrol and diesel prices are falling almost imperceptibly,” Codacons notes. “From 31 July to yesterday, Brent crude prices have in fact plummeted by 12.7 per cent, but at the pump the reduction today was just 0.3 euro cents for diesel and 0.2 euro cents for petrol.” “The actual cut in excise duty on diesel, introduced on 28 July, therefore amounts to 8.8 euro cents, compared with the 17 cents originally planned, with a full tank still costing 4.1 euros more than it should,” calculates Codacons. “And the extension of the excise duty discount until 25 August, decided yesterday by the government, will not be enough to save Italians’ holidays,” warns the association – The period of the post-holiday exodus at the end of August, when millions of families will be travelling home at the end of their holidays, will remain uncovered, and the measure will not apply to 17 million citizens who own petrol-powered cars, who are being unfairly penalised despite the sky-high prices of petrol.” “Not to mention that, should oil prices remain at current levels or even fall further, price reductions at the pump will be extremely slow, due to the usual speculative phenomenon of ‘double speed’ in fuel prices,” concludes Codacons.
