Florence, 3 Oct. (LaPresse) – “I think Clint Eastwood once said: ‘If you want a guarantee, buy yourself a toaster’. Politics isn’t based on personal relationships; it’s based on ideas. So I say to Conte and everyone else: if you want to focus on substantive discussions, we’re on board. Perhaps with a German-style contract, where we know what you’re doing, when you’re doing it, why you’re doing it and within what timeframe. But let’s put an end to these internal squabbles that achieve nothing. Carrying on arguing within the centre-left means handing the country over to Meloni and handing the Quirinale over to Meloni. I will not be complicit in Giorgia Meloni going to the Quirinale. I brought Sergio Mattarella to the Quirinale; I didn’t bring Matteo Salvini to the Quirinale! So I don’t need to offer guarantees: I need to secure votes for a venture with clear boundaries for everyone, so that no one can afford to step outside those boundaries.” These were the words of Italia Viva leader Matteo Renzi, spoken this morning in Florence on the sidelines of the second day of the Leopolda conference.
