Rome, Oct. 31 (LaPresse) – Woody Allen was a guest on Radio2 Social Club, connecting remotely to talk about his first novel What’s Happening to Baum?, set to be released soon, and in view of his upcoming 90th birthday. The celebrated director explained that he had always wanted to write a book but never had the necessary time until now, when he finally managed to reflect and organize his ideas. He emphasized that the writing process requires solitude, but when a project is finished, he finds himself surrounded by many people, as in his film productions.
Allen spoke about his approach to work, describing how, even when tackling serious themes, he manages to maintain a touch of humor in his projects. Regarding his films, he said that people identify with the characters, often inspired by real-life situations or stories read in newspapers, but he prefers to use exaggeration to avoid excessive realism. The director also revealed that, as a great admirer of other professionals, he sometimes finds himself facing cinema legends, but ultimately realizes that even in show business, people face the same everyday problems.
About his 90th birthday, Allen said he does not intend to celebrate it, considering aging an inevitable and not particularly happy process, but that life should be accepted as it is. He added that he does not believe in the afterlife and only wishes good health for himself and his family. Finally, he fondly remembered Diane Keaton, recently passed away, describing her as a major influence on his life and work, and as one of the people with whom he shared great laughter and complicity.
