Cannes: Fiorello quips: ‘No Italian films? They’ve picked a Bosnian film’

Rome, 10 April (LaPresse) – Another week in the company of ‘La Pennicanza’, the radio show hosted by Fiorello and Biggio and broadcast live on Rai Radio2, draws to a close with Friday’s episode. Among the topics of the day were cinema and the Cannes Film Festival. The showman comments on Italy’s absence from the competition: “We didn’t even qualify here. They’ve picked a Bosnian film…”. The quip is heightened by a surreal phone call with Nanni Moretti: “Do you realise? Everyone’s there. Costa Rica, Nepal, Somalia, Kenya, Lebanon… and they won’t even let the Italians in with a ticket. We’re the Gattuso of cinema. They don’t understand true art; they even rejected one of my students’ masterpieces, a beautiful short film, ‘Petardo’: the story of a pianist who loses all the fingers on his hand in a firecracker explosion… except his little fingers. But despite this, he doesn’t lose the desire to play and carries on using only the highest and lowest ones. The 26-minute close-up shot of the keyboard as he plays the ‘Radetzky March’ is memorable – the showman’s gag.
