Total worldwide takings amounted to $264 million. The weekend’s result marked Nolan’s best opening since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in 2012. Few living directors would be capable of producing such a star-studded adaptation of Homer’s epic poem with such a high budget. But in a Hollywood where intellectual property rights dictate the terms for most blockbusters, Nolan has transformed one of the world’s oldest literary works into an unlikely summer blockbuster. By way of comparison, Walt Disney Co.’s ‘Oceania’ came in second place, some way behind, with $19 million in its second weekend at the box office.
