Milan, Aug. 18 (LaPresse) – Colombian superstar Shakira pledged on Monday to help rebuild at least 10 schools in a remote region of her country devastated by last week’s earthquake, which caused hundreds of deaths and damaged thousands of schools in western Colombia. The world-famous singer, known for the song ‘Hips Don’t Lie’, made the promise during a surprise visit to Quibdó, capital of the Colombian province of Chocó, where she visited damaged schools, embracing students and taking photos with them. “What worries me most is that the schools will not be rebuilt once the emergency is over,” Shakira told reporters. “Every day that children do not go to school is a day in which they lose their future,” she added. Shakira was accompanied by Howard Buffett, son of billionaire philanthropist Warren Buffett and a longtime supporter of Colombia, who has previously helped Shakira build schools in the country. The Howard G. Buffett Foundation will work with Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation) on the project. “When she calls me, I come,” Buffett said during the visit. The singer also announced donations of $500,000 each from Global Citizen and Live Nation to support the cause.
