Milan, Aug. 19 (LaPresse) — John Irvin, the British director who helmed the BAFTA-winning BBC miniseries *The Mole*, as well as films such as *Hamburger Hill*, *The Dogs of War*, and *Magnum, P.I.*, has died at the age of 86. Irvin passed away “peacefully at home” on Aug. 11, surrounded by his family, as confirmed to The Guardian by his producer Claire Evans. Irvin made his directorial debut with *The Dogs of War* (1981), starring Christopher Walken, and went on to direct various films, including *Magnum, P.I.* (1986) with Arnold Schwarzenegger, *Hamburger Hill: Hill 937* (1987), *Robin Hood: The Legend* (1991) starring Uma Thurman, *The Exercise of Power* (1991) starring Donald Sutherland, *Three Widows and a Murder* (1994), *A Month by the Lake* (1995), ‘The Spiral of Vengeance’ (1997) starring Harvey Keitel, ‘Battle in Hell’ (1998), ‘Shiner’ (2000), a British noir starring Michael Caine, and ‘The Physical Education of Young Ladies’ (2005) with an almost entirely female cast including Jacqueline Bisset and the Italians Enrico Lo Verso, Eva Grimaldi, Galatea Ranzi, Urbano Barberini, and Silvia De Santis.
