Rome, Sept. 16 (LaPresse) – ‘Paparazzi’ is out, the first single taken from ‘Amateur’, Cesare Cremonini’s tenth album of unreleased songs, due out on October 23. ‘Paparazzi’ is an adrenaline-fueled track that struggles to find points of reference in today’s Italian music scene, combining different languages that are not simply juxtaposed, but end up generating something extreme yet highly immediate. Produced like the debut track of an alternative band from a London suburb, Paparazzi makes an impact from the very first listen with its rough groove, sinuous guitar riff and international sound. A clear artistic statement that puts live music at the center and chooses rock’n’roll as an attitude even before considering it as a musical reference, opening up a new direction in Cremonini’s career. Cesare’s voice, from the very first verse, moves freely, directly and with a rasp, accompanied by the dry sound of a completely renewed band, born from the meeting between musicians from the English alternative scene and some of the most authoritative names on the international stage. In fact, recording the track alongside Cremonini and his long-standing core team made up of producers Alessandro Magnanini and Alessandro De Crescenzo were some of the most influential contemporary musicians and artists: among them Malcolm Catto on drums, the incredible Donny McCaslin on saxophones and producer and musician Paul Stacey on guitars. An unprecedented lineup that helps define Cremonini’s new sound, bringing together different musical experiences and backgrounds with the strength of songwriting that, this time too, does not rely on what has already been said or done. «I chose “Paparazzi” as the first single because it has that rough and adrenaline-fueled sound of the early days, it really sounds like the launch single of a band that came out of the outskirts of London. It’s the sound I wanted to hear when turning on the radio and I said to myself: “I can try to do it myself”. I tried to grow together with my music and in the end I discovered that the destination was to enjoy the freedom to make it. Playing while forgetting oneself, becoming a newcomer again, taking off the mask of the artist and the career so as to be able to surprise oneself. Lies and truths become blurred, while irony and provocation become useful tools for telling the story of our time without claiming to explain it. At the center is the increasingly uncertain relationship between reality and representation, within a media system that makes it more difficult every day to distinguish between them. Narration today matters more than truth, and halfway through the song Cremonini sums up this concept with an emblematic phrase: “truth is a bigger lie”. Alongside Cremonini in “AMATEUR” appears SIG, the golden-skull character who visually accompanies the project. A musician and symbolic figure, SIG embodies the return to the sound and attitude of bands and the desire to strip pop’s sound and image down to their essentials, freeing them from the superfluous. His figure emerges from the short circuit between death and luxury, desire and representation, and looks to Damien Hirst’s famous skull, which transforms an ancient symbol of mortality into a dazzling and seductive object. SIG thus concentrates in himself what accumulates around the music and the artist, leaving Cremonini free to bring the sound back to the center.
