Rome, 28 July (LaPresse) – Between 2010 and 2026, the number of coastal municipalities affected by 1,073 extreme weather events rose to 308, accounting for 48 per cent of the total. Flooding, tornadoes and storm surges are the most frequent events. This is what emerges from the new ‘Beaches’ report by Legambiente and the ‘Città clima’ Observatory. The analysis shows that it is no longer just record-breaking heat that is having such a significant impact; in Italy, coastal municipalities and beaches are increasingly threatened by the climate crisis and extreme weather events that exacerbate coastal erosion. According to Legambiente, Italy needs “a specific national plan for the coast” and, above all, “to focus on prevention and stop reacting to emergencies as they arise”.
