Rome, 21 Oct. (LaPresse) – Greenhouse gas emissions are set to fall by 1.5 per cent in 2026 compared with 2025. This is the estimate drawn up by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) on the basis of available data. ISPRA highlights that the decrease in emissions is occurring against a backdrop of a 0.8 per cent increase in GDP. The reduction – explains ISPRA – is driven in particular by a 7.7 per cent fall in coal consumption, followed by a 1.4 per cent decrease in energy production and a 1.2 per cent drop in heating consumption, in line with natural gas consumption. There was also a slight decrease in the transport sector – ISPRA notes – amounting to -0.2 per cent, mainly due to a reduction in the consumption of diesel for transport, partially offset by an increase in petrol consumption. As regards agriculture and waste management in 2026, no significant changes are expected compared with last year.
