Campi Flegrei, the fear of the residents of Bagnoli: ‘It was a night of fear’

Naples, 13 Mar. (LaPresse) – “I heard people screaming, running out of the buildings, someone who lives on the first floor or mezzanine and found windows and front door blocked climbed down from the balcony”. This is the testimony of a resident of Bagnoli, a neighbourhood in the western part of Naples, not far from the epicentre of the 4.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the population of Naples and the Phlegraean municipalities of Pozzuoli and Bacoli at 1.25 am this morning. Unlike the tremors caused by the phenomenon of bradyseism, typical of the Campi Flegrei area, last night's tremor was particularly felt in the city of Naples, due to its proximity to the epicentre, its shallowness and the directionality of the tremor which was directed towards the east, right towards the centre of the city. ‘I can't go into my house,’ a woman told LaPresse, ’it's all damaged. We spent the night in the street with a 4-month-old baby and another one-year-old with a fever. We didn't receive any assistance, they didn't want to let us into the NATO base.’ The reference is to the former NATO base in Viale della Liberazione, where after the earthquake some people tried to enter to find a safe space. ‘It was a night full of fear, I had a bad time’, added another resident.
