Rome, 26 September. (LaPresse) – ‘We cannot accept’ the appeal of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, “because this proposal comes to prevent our boats from sailing in international waters with the risk of being attacked. It’s like saying “if you want to save yourselves, we cannot ask those who will attack you not to attack you, even though it is a crime, we ask you to get out of the way”. This legal issue is not just a matter of principle, it is a substantial issue at the root of the fact that, until now, the very entity that created this short circuit, namely Israel, is committing genocide without any of our governments having yet had the courage to impose sanctions, impose an arms embargo or close part of their trade relations’. This was stated in a video posted on Facebook by the Flotilla’s spokesperson for Italy, Maria Elena Delia. ‘We have received a proposal from President Mattarella to accept, for our own good and the protection of human life in general, which we agree with 100%, to divert our route and accept the mediation proposal to bring aid to Cyprus and from there, thanks to the mediation of the United Nations, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Italian government as the logistical partner, to get it to Gaza,’ Delia added.
