Rome protest: clashes between police and demonstrators at Santa Maria Maggiore. Police charge on Via Merulana

Rome, October 4 (LaPresse) – Clashes broke out between police and a group of demonstrators in Rome, between Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore and the Esquilino district. Police used tear gas and water cannons. A group of hooded individuals dressed in black was stopped by plainclothes units under the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Along the route, the windows of a supermarket were damaged. Police charges with armored vehicles and water cannons continued along Via Merulana, before protesters retreated toward Via Labicana. Three demonstrators were detained for identification.
