Prisons, Zuppi: ‘There is too much suffering, do not execute the aggressor’

Rome, 14 December (LaPresse) – ‘There is too much suffering in prisons. It is a matter of doing justice to the victim, not executing the aggressor.’ So said the president of the CEI, Italian Episcopal Conference, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, in an interview with “La Stampa”. ‘Two-thirds of people who leave prison and who have only followed programmes inside prison are repeat offenders. On the contrary, those who have been admitted to alternative measures to prison have a very low recidivism rate,’ added the cardinal.
