Security, Conte to Meloni: ‘Unified resolution acceptable if it incorporates our proposals’

Rome, 2 February (LaPresse) – “Even the majority has finally realised that there is a security emergency in the country that affects all citizens closely. We have been saying for months that the level of insecurity, both real and perceived by citizens, has reached unsustainable levels. There was certainly no need to wait for unspeakable incidents such as the one that occurred on Saturday in Turin, which we at M5S immediately condemned, expressing our full solidarity with the police and the officer who was attacked by a group of violent individuals. Citizens are waiting for answers and concrete solutions. They are asking for safer cities and to be able to take the underground or train without fear of being stabbed or attacked. Now Giorgia Meloni is also asking the opposition to sign a joint text with the majority, after months of literally snubbing our proposals, pretending that the problem did not exist or that it was the responsibility of mayors to ensure safe cities. Well then, let’s make it clear once and for all: it is the responsibility of the government, and Giorgia Meloni and her ministers’ underestimation of the increase in muggings, robberies, assaults and rapes has been very serious’. This was written on social media by the leader of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte. ‘Does the government now really want to listen to our proposals? Is it really willing to do things seriously and responsibly without taking advantage of individual incidents for tactical purposes? If so, he explains, we are ready and willing to verify this. We are ready to immediately share a resolution that commits the government to providing the answers that have been lacking so far, starting with greater investment to make up for the shortage of law enforcement personnel and more funds to make our cities safe. And then a law that makes heinous crimes that cause social alarm prosecutable ex officio, without the need for a complaint from the victim. “This is what people need. And we hope that our proposal will be supported by all the political forces of the majority and the opposition,” concludes the former prime minister.
