Trento: Mussolini remains an honorary citizen; the majority loses in a secret ballot

Trento, 18 March (LaPresse) – Benito Mussolini remains an honorary citizen of Trento. This was decided by the Trento City Council, which last night, in an unusually closed-door session, failed to secure the four-fifths majority required to revoke the title from the Duce, as requested by the centre-left governing majority. Although the Lega, Fratelli d’Italia and Forza Italia had already hinted that they would not vote in favour during the group leaders’ meeting, the coalition fell short. In the secret ballot, four votes were missing, two of which were from GenerAzione Trento councillors. “The issue was simple,” said Mayor Franco Ianeselli. “There is a dictator who led a country to the brink of disaster and who was found to hold honorary citizenship. Revoking it was a necessary step; it would have taken just a second.”
