Rome, 21 May (LaPresse) – “There was a panic room into which we were taken. They handed us our shoes so we couldn’t even defend ourselves, and there were three thugs who, shouting ‘Welcome to Israel’, beat us savagely.” This is the account given by M5S MP Dario Carotenuto upon his arrival at Fiumicino Airport. The MP was part of the Global Sumud Flotilla expedition bound for Gaza, which was boarded by the Israeli navy. The activists were then taken to Israel. “I was punched in the eye, kicked, had a chain ripped from my neck and was handcuffed,” he added, “but I got off lightly; I came out of it on my feet. One person was taken to the infirmary with internal injuries; others had their eyes bandaged.” “The sister of the Irish President was helping to coordinate the first-aid centre, and they treated people who were in a terrible state,” he continued, “including those with fractures and some who had been sexually assaulted. There were also young women and elderly people who had been tortured.”
