Milan, 24 May (LaPresse) – Polling stations are open across the 894 municipalities holding elections in Italy for the ballot scheduled for today and tomorrow. Of these, 121 are municipalities with more than 15,000 inhabitants (including 18 county towns) and 773 are municipalities with 15,000 inhabitants or fewer. Over 6.6 million Italians are called to the polls: voters will be casting their ballots to elect new municipal councils and executive committees, and polling stations will be open today from 7am to 11pm and tomorrow from 7am to 3pm. Once the polling stations close, the counting of votes will begin. In the event that no candidate is elected in the first round, run-off elections have already been scheduled for Sunday 7 and Monday 8 June, with the same polling station opening hours as for the first round, for municipalities with over 15,000 inhabitants. In municipalities with over 15,000 inhabitants, it is possible to vote for the mayoral candidate and for one of the lists associated with them, by placing a cross against the name or symbol of one of the lists supporting them. It is also possible to vote for the mayoral candidate and a list that is not associated with them. Finally, split voting is permitted: a mark for the mayoral candidate and another for a list that does not support the coalition of the chosen mayor. In municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants, however, split voting is not permitted because each mayoral candidate is supported by a single list.
