Madrid (Spain), 6 June (LaPresse) – Pope Leo XIV begins his apostolic journey to Spain today, with stops in Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria and Tenerife. This is the ninth visit by a Pope to the Iberian country and comes 15 years after Benedict XVI’s last trip to Madrid for World Youth Day. During his seven days in Spain, Pope Leo XIV will be the first Pope to deliver a speech in the Spanish Parliament; he will inaugurate the Tower of Jesus Christ, the tallest tower of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, to mark the centenary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí; and he will meet migrants at the Arguineguín pier in Gran Canaria, known as the ‘pier of shame’ and a symbol of the 2020 migration crisis. The Holy See Press Office has announced that the Pope will also receive ‘some victims of abuse by members of the clergy in Spain’, a meeting organised by the Spanish Church.
