Rome, 25 June (LaPresse) – The five-year prison sentence handed down to Mauro Moretti, former chief executive of Ferrovie dello Stato and Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, is now final, and he will have to serve his sentence in prison. Moretti will now be sent to prison, lawyer Ambra Giovane explained to LaPresse. The Court of Cassation has confirmed Moretti’s liability for the offence of negligent railway disaster in the trial concerning the Viareggio disaster, the tragedy of 29 June 2009 which claimed the lives of 32 people and left over 130 injured. The decision by the Fourth Criminal Section of the Supreme Court brings to a close a long legal saga lasting almost seventeen years. The judges also upheld the convictions of ten other defendants, recognising their criminal liability and leaving the appeal verdict unchanged. Among them is Michele Mario Elia, former chief executive of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, sentenced to 4 years, 2 months and 20 days’ imprisonment. The victims’ families expressed their satisfaction at the upholding of the convictions.
