Genoa, 29 June (LaPresse) – Following the feared delays, it has now been officially confirmed: 16 July, before the summer recess, will be the day the verdict is handed down in the trial concerning the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa. Almost eight years after the disaster, and four years since the trial began, the presiding judge, Paolo Lepri, has announced the date of the first-instance verdict in the trial concerning the disaster of 14 August 2018, which claimed the lives of 43 people. The day will feature the final closing arguments, after which the judges will retire to deliberate and read out the verdict in the final of 280 hearings. Last winter, the prosecution had sought a total of almost 400 years’ imprisonment for 56 defendants, with the highest sentence being the 18 years sought for the former CEO of Aspi, Giovanni Castellucci.
