Rome, 1 July (LaPresse) – The Society of St Pius X “sincerely regrets that, due to exceptional circumstances, these consecrations were conferred without the Holy Father’s authorisation. It is particularly regrettable that the Superior General of the Society was not given the opportunity to meet His Holiness Pope Leo XIV in person, to explain to him in a filial manner the serious reasons that made this ceremony necessary”. This is stated in a note issued by the Lefebvrians following the episcopal ordinations at Écône. “The profound joy inspired by these episcopal consecrations cannot, however, be overshadowed,” the note continues. “By ensuring the necessary means for the preservation of the sacred heritage of Tradition, the gift of these four new bishops is truly a great grace for the Society itself and for the whole Church. The Priestly Society of St Pius X rejoices deeply and offers a fervent act of thanksgiving to God, thanking in particular the Blessed Virgin Mary for having permitted this transmission of the fullness of the priesthood, for the greater glory of God, the honour of the Holy Church and the salvation of souls.”
