Palermo, 1 July (LaPresse) – It cannot be used to verify with certainty the presence of biological material on the fingerprint found on the Fiat 127 used on 6 January 1980 by the killers who murdered the former regional president, Piersanti Mattarella. This is the conclusion of the expert report submitted by the Carabinieri’s RIS unit. The new investigations were ordered by the investigating magistrate at the Court of Palermo in light of new technological developments. The magistrate entrusted the task of extracting DNA to the Forensic Genetics Unit at Careggi Hospital in Florence. This is a team of leading experts comprising the head of the unit, Ugo Ricci; Elena Carra, a lecturer in Biological, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies at the University of Palermo; and Carlo Previderè, a professor in the Department of Public Health at the University of Pavia. Mafia bosses Nino Madonia and Giuseppe Lucchese are under investigation as the perpetrators of the murder.
