Rome, July 3 (LaPresse) – “What happened near the Colosseum the other evening is a serious incident that must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. At the same time, it is important to highlight the prompt joint intervention by the Local Police and the law enforcement agencies, which led to the arrest of those responsible and the rapid dispersal of the crowd.” This was stated by Roberto Gualtieri following the attack on officers of the Rome Local Police by a gang near the Colosseum on the evening of July 1. “I spoke today with Prefect Lamberto Giannini, and we agreed to address the issue at the next Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security. We also decided to immediately strengthen the security presence in the Largo Gaetana Agnesi and Colosseum area, both through the national law enforcement agencies and the Local Police, which will increase patrols in the area as part of the Night Plan.” The mayor added: “Any signs, even at an early stage, that could indicate the emergence of phenomena such as youth gangs or the so-called maranza must be monitored with the utmost attention and tackled promptly. At the same time, we must avoid presenting a distorted picture of reality: the data show that these remain, fortunately, isolated phenomena and that Rome continues to be one of the safest major European capitals.”
