Rome, 22 July (LaPresse) – Two people are under investigation for the theft of fentanyl from the Israelitico Hospital in Rome. The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office has entered two hospital security guards on the register of suspects, on suspicion of having stolen 80 vials of the powerful anaesthetic from the hospital pharmacy on Via Fulda, in the Magliana district. According to the prosecution’s theory, the theft was carried out on commission and the drug may have ended up on the black market, destined for illegal drug dealers, unlicensed beauty clinics and clandestine operating theatres. For the time being, it has been ruled out that the powerful analgesic – which, when used for ‘recreational’ purposes, has narcotic effects 100 times stronger than morphine and up to 50 times stronger than heroin – could have fallen into the hands of drug dealers. Initial investigations have revealed that over 40 vials were reportedly taken between 21 and 22 June. The 80 missing packs could yield around 16,000 doses. The investigation is being conducted by the Carabinieri’s NAS unit, coordinated by Deputy Public Prosecutor Giovanni Conzo and Assistant Public Prosecutor Mario D’Ovinola. Investigators and public prosecutors are maintaining the utmost confidentiality regarding the case.
