Rome, July 22 (LaPresse) – More than 200 Carabinieri officers have been deployed since the early hours of this morning in a large-scale police operation across the province of Reggio Calabria and several other locations throughout Italy, including Catanzaro, Cosenza, Palermo, Catania, Trapani, Caltanissetta, Turin, Milan, Pavia, Pescara, and L’Aquila. The operation resulted in the execution of 35 pre-trial detention orders, issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Reggio Calabria at the request of the city’s District Anti-Mafia Directorate. The suspects face various charges, including participation in a criminal organization aimed at drug trafficking, with the aggravating circumstance of acting to facilitate the Alvaro crime clan of Sinopoli and taking advantage of the conditions associated with mafia-type criminal organizations under Article 416-bis of the Italian Criminal Code. Additional charges include drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons, attempted kidnapping for extortion, and other offenses, for a total of 47 counts. Investigators uncovered an extensive criminal network dedicated to drug trafficking, including numerous operations to import narcotics from South America through the port of Gioia Tauro. The investigation reconstructed the trafficking of more than 300 kilograms of narcotics, primarily cocaine. According to investigators, arrests made in flagrante delicto and multiple drug seizures confirmed the group’s continued activity and full operational capacity in the narcotics trade.
