This finding suggests that the man may have died from suffocation caused by his own blood, although forensic investigations will be required to determine the exact cause of death. The post-mortem examination was also attended by a forensic consultant appointed by Fabio Anselmo, the lawyer acting on behalf of the victim’s family, and a forensic consultant appointed by the lawyer representing the police officers and 118 emergency service personnel who attended the scene. This forensic hypothesis appears to be supported by footage recorded during the police operation on Sunday afternoon in Via Svevo, both by residents and by the bodycam of one of the two officers who arrived on the scene in the initial moments, when Fakir was pinned to the ground. The post-mortem examination must now clarify – and the forensic experts must provide their findings within 90 days – whether the haemorrhage that flooded the lungs was the direct cause of death by suffocation or a contributing factor, alongside other factors, that led to his death.
