Rome, 28 July (LaPresse) – “The capture of Matteo Messina Denaro has enabled us to obtain documentation and build on what we had in our ‘knowledge base’, in particular all the wiretaps carried out over time and subsequently used to develop the traditional pillars of our efforts to combat the Mafia, specifically those individuals who facilitated his 30-year period on the run.” So said Palermo’s Public Prosecutor, Maurizio de Lucia, during a hearing before the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Mafia and other criminal organisations. “The investigation into these individuals falls within our remit, and our debt to the victims of Cosa Nostra and Matteo Messina Denaro entails a moral duty to track down, arrest and bring these individuals to trial: to date, eighteen of those who facilitated Matteo Messina Denaro’s life on the run have been arrested; in several cases, the sentences are now final,” explains De Lucia.
