Rome, 30 July (LaPresse) – From last February to 28 July, there were 84 confirmed cases of West Nile virus infection in humans in Italy, with two deaths. This was announced in a bulletin issued by the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS). Of the 84 cases, 37 presented as the neuro-invasive form (one case imported from the Maldives, whilst for one case the province of probable exposure is unknown), 19 were asymptomatic, identified in blood donors (one case for which the province of probable exposure is unknown), 27 cases of fever and one symptomatic case. Among the confirmed cases, two deaths were reported (one in an imported case). During the same period, three cases of Usutu virus were reported (in Lombardy). There are 47 provinces with confirmed circulation of the West Nile virus, spanning 12 regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Sicily and Sardinia. In numerical terms, the current epidemiological trend is in line with that of the previous year: during the same period in 2025, there were 89 confirmed cases in Italy, 40 of which were of the neuro-invasive form.
