Rome, 1 August (LaPresse) – An appeal signed by film directors, actors and leading figures from the world of culture is calling for a solution for the residents of Spintime, after the building was declared unfit for habitation following a fire that broke out three nights ago. Since then, over 400 people have been unable to return to their homes, spending their days in accommodation provided by the local council or outdoors on Via Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. The signatories include figures of the calibre of Marco Bellocchio, Paolo Sorrentino, Carlo Verdone, Matteo Garrone, Mario Martone, Paolo Virzì, Francesca Archibugi, Francesca Comencini, Pietro Marcello, Susanna Nicchiarelli, Leonardo Di Costanzo and Sabina Guzzanti. The text states that among those forced to remain outside the building are elderly people, those who are ill and over a hundred children, and it condemns the lack of a definite timeframe for their return to their homes. The authors of the appeal also maintain that the temporary accommodation arranged so far is insufficient and that their ability to remain outside the building has been made possible above all by the solidarity of local residents and neighbourhood organisations. The appeal also highlights the work carried out over the last thirteen years by SpinTime, described as a space which, as well as providing a response to the housing crisis, hosts social services, community health clinics, after-school clubs, trade union activities and cultural initiatives open to the city, including an auditorium, a recording studio, a library and a museum. Finally, the organisers announce that the permanent sit-in outside the building will continue until definitive solutions are found for the residents and for the activities housed within the building.
