Rome, 12 August (LaPresse) – It was not a driver’s error that caused the tram to derail on 27 February on Viale Vittorio Veneto in Milan, resulting in two deaths and around fifty injuries. According to the report by the defence consultants for Pietro Montemurro, a 60-year-old tram driver, the man lost consciousness due to acute vasovagal syndrome. The expert report rules out negligent conduct on the part of the driver and also finds ATM not liable. Among the possible triggers for his collapse were a blow to his big toe sustained whilst helping a passenger in a wheelchair and dental treatment he had undergone that morning. Montemurro is said to have lost consciousness whilst still holding the control lever, causing the tram to accelerate and preventing the emergency brake from being activated.
