Rome, Aug. 16 (LaPresse) – “I learned with dismay and sadness of the theft that took place at the Regional Interdisciplinary Museum of Messina, where three panels from the San Gregorio Polyptych and a double-sided panel depicting the Madonna and Christ in Pietà, attributed to Antonello da Messina and of extraordinary value to our cultural heritage, were stolen. I spoke with the Mayor of Messina, Federico Basile, to whom I expressed my closeness to the city and the entire community over what happened. I immediately consulted with the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. As always, I trust the work of the security forces, in this specific case the police, who have been entrusted with the investigation. The Ministry of Culture assures its full willingness to cooperate with the regional authorities, which are responsible for managing the island’s museums, due to the special autonomy in force.” Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli said.
