Rome, Aug. 18 (LaPresse) – Tensions ran high yesterday in Olevano Romano, where a man of African origin, almost two meters tall and in a highly agitated state, caused panic in the Valle neighborhood, damaging furnishings and shouting. Some frightened residents barricaded themselves inside their homes. Carabinieri from the Olevano Romano Station and the Palestrina Company, Local Police officers, 118 emergency medical personnel and Mayor Umberto Quaresima intervened at the scene. After several attempts to calm the man down, the situation escalated. The man attacked the officers, hitting them with kicks and punches, and also climbed onto a ladder. The Carabinieri eventually managed to restrain him using pepper spray. The man was reported for resisting a public official. Four Carabinieri from the Palestrina Company were injured. One of them suffered a fracture and will undergo maxillofacial surgery this morning at Tor Vergata Hospital. Mayor Umberto Quaresima was also injured and posted a photo on social media from the emergency room with ice on his arm. “Today I suffered a bruise to my arm during a heated struggle aimed at calming a non-EU citizen who was in a state of madness. Fortunately, we avoided the worst, but I assure you it was not easy,” he wrote. “The commander of the local police and the Carabinieri, whom I sincerely thank for their professionalism, courage and promptness, were also injured while trying to calm the person down,” he explained, assuring: “We will continue with determination and strength to demand greater control measures in our area from the law enforcement forces tasked with this, in order to guarantee security and legality, also arranging administrative checks and investigations aimed at cracking down on illegal conduct.”
