Milan, 25 Aug. (LaPresse) – A man and a woman, husband and wife, aged 51 and 48 respectively and originally from the province of Salerno, who were on holiday in Salento, died overnight following a road accident – a head-on collision with another car driven by a 41-year-old local man, who was subsequently arrested by the Carabinieri on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. According to initial reports, the couple were travelling along the SP 17 road, which links Salice Salentino to Veglie and on towards Porto Cesareo, in a Fiat Panda when another car coming from the opposite direction reportedly veered into their lane. The violent collision was unavoidable and left the couple with no chance of survival; they died instantly. The other driver is also in a serious condition and was taken by paramedics from the 118 emergency service to the Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce. Following initial toxicology and breathalyser tests, he tested positive for cocaine and cannabinoids, and his blood alcohol level was significantly above the legal limit. Firefighters also attended the scene and extracted the bodies of the couple, who were trapped in the wreckage of the car. The 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and, as ordered by the public prosecutor on duty, placed under house arrest.
